This file is for you — from Mummy and Pappa, with love and respect.
You are coming to care for Khushi — that means so much to us. You raised us, and now our daughter will get your love too. This file is not a "list of instructions," nor is it meant to say "you are doing things wrong." It exists only so we can share with you the new knowledge about raising children that has come in Khushi's time.
There was so much that was right and beautiful in the way you raised us — love, patience, values. But science has since changed a few things. You are not old-fashioned — you are experienced. And when experience blends with a little of the new, it's the best of both for Khushi.
One request: read this file once, calmly, and wherever you have a question, ask us. We are going to raise Khushi together.
This part comes first because it is the most important.
Our society is paternal/patriarchal — that is true, and it is not your fault. You grew up in that very society. But we want to raise Khushi as a girl who never sees herself as any less than a boy. For this, all of us — especially the elders — will need to let go of some old ways.
❌ Old way: "She's a girl, she shouldn't make so much ruckus," "Sit quietly, be well-behaved," "Girls don't do that."
✅ New way: Let Khushi run, climb, fall, play in the mud. Running, jumping, climbing — these are as essential for a girl's body and brain as for a boy's. Three hours of movement a day is her "education."
❌ Old way: Keeping a boy away from housework, "teaching" a girl in the kitchen.
✅ New way: Khushi should learn housework — but not because she is a girl. Rather, because doing housework makes any child (boy or girl) independent and successful. Research shows children who do chores from age 3–4 become more successful adults. So let Khushi pour water, roll rotis, carry dishes — but as "the fun of learning," not "a girl's duty."
Praise her effort, not her looks.
This way Khushi will measure her worth by her ability, not her appearance. That makes a lifelong difference.
Never make her feel less because she is a girl.
❌ Old way: "A girl shouldn't cry" or "A girl shouldn't get angry."
✅ New way: Khushi has the right to every emotion — anger, tears, tantrums (see Part 4). Emotions are not to be suppressed, but to be understood and named.
Don't attach labels — "you are naughty," "you are shy," "you are stubborn."
When we repeatedly call a child a name, she starts to believe it and become it. If we keep saying "she's shy," she'll hide behind us at every new place; if we keep saying "you're naughty," she'll act up because "that's who I am." Talk about the behavior in the moment, not her character:
A behavior can be corrected; a label sticks for years.
Khushi will learn not from words but by watching. So:
Remember: We want to raise Khushi to be a girl who one day says, "I can do anything." That happens only when the elders around her make her feel that way — starting today, from age 2.
What is the single most powerful thing in all of child-rearing? Not expensive toys, not phone/TV. It is — back-and-forth (turn-taking) conversation with Khushi.
What does that mean?
1. You say something to her ("Look, a crow has landed!")
2. Then stay quiet for 5 seconds — give her time to respond (even if she just says "crow!" or points a finger)
3. Then build on what she said ("Yes! A black crow. It goes caw-caw!")
This "turn-taking" — it improves her brain, language, and intelligence, with effects lasting even 10 years later. This is proven by research.
Everyday examples:
Ask "open" questions, not "yes/no" ones. This is the thing grandparents most often miss. A question she can answer with just "yes/no" or a nod ends the conversation; an open question opens it up and makes her think and talk.
Don't make this mistake: A barrage of questions ("What's this? What's this? Say it!") feels like a test — that isn't good. Talk, just talk — as if two friends are chatting.
This is the hardest for grandparents, because out of love we want to do everything for her. But —
Letting Khushi do things herself — even if slowly, even if it spills — is her greatest lesson.
Examples:
Count to 10 in your mind before helping. Most of the time she'll manage it herself. When she is trying, you'll feel the urge to say "let me do it" — but pause. Let her struggle a little. Then give a small hint ("hold it like this, look"). Don't do the whole thing for her.
At 2–3 years a child cries a lot, gets stubborn, throws "tantrums" — this is completely normal, she is not spoiled. Her brain is still learning to control emotions.
It is hard to watch her cry — but crying itself does no harm. For a grandparent, tears feel like an emergency, and the instinct is to stop them instantly — by picking her up, by giving her what she's crying for, by putting on a phone, by distracting with a sweet. Please resist that instinct. When you stop the crying by giving in, she learns "crying is how I get things," and the tantrums grow. Letting her cry while you stay calmly beside her is not neglect — it is exactly how she learns that big feelings pass and she is still safe. You are not being harsh; you are teaching her.
What to do while she cries: stay near, get down to her level, stay calm and quiet (don't lecture, don't argue, don't beg). A few soft words are enough — "I'm right here. I know you're upset." Wait. The storm will pass in a few minutes. Once she's calm, then hug, then talk. You don't have to make the crying stop — you only have to stay with her through it.
Old way: "Be quiet! Stop crying!" or hitting/scaring.
New way — 3 steps:
1. Name the emotion: "You're angry. You wanted that toy."
2. Show understanding: "I know, it feels really bad."
3. Set a limit on the behavior (not the feeling): "It's okay to be angry, but no hitting. Come, let's stomp our feet."
Very important:
The most important warning — 🚫 Never hit, threaten, or scare Khushi. Don't say "a ghost will come," "the police will take you," "the bogeyman will take you." Physical punishment (a slap, a smack) harms a child, it does not correct. If you feel angry, step away yourself for a moment and take a deep breath.
Read this part carefully, because this is where our old habits get in the way the most.
You decide: what to eat, when, and where. Khushi decides: whether to eat, and how much.
That is — you serve good, nourishing food on the plate. But how much to eat is Khushi's decision.
It is perfectly okay if she skips a meal, or barely eats once or twice. A toddler's appetite goes up and down from day to day — some meals she'll eat a lot, some almost nothing. This is normal and not a reason to panic or to force food in. Judge her eating over a whole week, not one meal. If she's active, growing, and happy, she is eating enough. Missing one dinner will not harm her; force-feeding will.
❌ "One more bite, just one more" — chasing her around to feed her.
In our homes, love means "make her clean the plate." But research says clearly: force-feeding makes a child eat less in the long run and learn to dislike food. When Khushi's tummy is full, she'll say "done" — believe her. If she's hungry, she'll eat at the next meal.
❌ Feeding her by showing TV/phone, or feeding her while walking her around.
Food should be eaten sitting at the table, without a screen. Not while wandering. This is very important.
❌ Feeding by hand (every day).
On special occasions it's fine, but not daily. Khushi eats herself — with hands or a spoon.
Khushi is vegetarian (milk, curd, eggs are fine; no meat or fish). In a vegetarian diet iron is absorbed less, so:
Until age 4, take this much care:
Khushi is learning three languages: Mamma speaks Kannada, Pappa (and you) speak Gujarati, and outside/at daycare it's English. Three languages do not confuse a child — this is proven.
Your role is the most precious: you speak with Khushi in Gujarati, sing songs, tell stories, read books. The time you are home is golden for Gujarati — because at daycare everything is English.
Rules:
This way, when Khushi grows up, she'll be able to talk with grandparents and relatives in Gujarati — this is your gift to her.
| ✅ Do | ❌ Don't |
|---|---|
| Talk with her, wait for her reply | Barrage of questions / testing her |
| Let her do it herself (clothes, eating, water) | Do everything for her |
| Praise effort ("you worked hard!") | Praise looks ("so pretty!") |
| Understand emotions, name them | Say "be quiet, don't cry" |
| Serve a little, give more if she asks | "One more bite" — force-feeding |
| Let her eat herself (hands/spoon) | Feed her chasing around, with TV on |
| Milk ≤ 2 cups, water between meals | Milk-biscuits all day, tea |
| Speak, sing, tell stories in Gujarati | Pressure her about language |
| Involve her in housework (girl/boy equal) | "She's a girl, she shouldn't do this" |
| Afternoon nap + 7:30 bedtime | Keeping her up late |
| Video calls with India (the only screen allowed) | Any other screen — cartoons, YouTube, phone to keep her quiet |
| Set limits with love | Hitting, scaring, "a ghost will come" |
Khushi is lucky to be receiving her grandparents' love. The values, stories, songs, language, and love you give her — no book or school can give that.
The things written in this file are not strict rules — they are a direction. If something is missed on some day, it's okay. The main points are these:
1. Talk with her, love her.
2. Raise her not as "a girl" but as a smart child — one who can do anything.
3. Let her do things herself, don't force.
If you have any question, ask us anytime. We are a team. 🙏
